Christmas Ramble
Sunday 29 December 2024
10:30 to 15:30
This year the ramble will be around Wotton Common, which is just south-west of Dorking. We'll meet at Friday Street car park and walk to Leith Hill, the highest point in Surrey, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Plan: We'll walk from the car park and stop for lunch at Leith Hill Tower, returning to the car park after lunch. The walk is just under 5 miles in total.
Date of walk: Sunday 29th December
Start time: We'll meet in the car park at 10.30 and set off either when we're all there or when the kids get fed up with waiting, whichever's earliest.
Meeting Point: Friday Street car park. (OS Grid Ref: TQ 12574 45777, ///plenty.drove.common, Google map)
Terrain: The ramble is mainly through beech woodland that, at the moment, is carpeted with fallen leaves. It's a slow ascent for most of the walk to Leith Hill, the last few hundred yards being a bit steeper, and a slow descent on the return.
Underfoot: It's winter, so it's going to be muddy. But the mud is mostly not the gloopy, sticks-to- your-boots kind. It's generally a mix of sand and organic matter on a firm chalk base. It's possible to walk through puddles and along streams without sinking in! Mostly.
Buggy friendliness: On a scale of 1 to 10 where 10 is pushing a buggy along the Thames towpath (before the collapse) and 1 is pushing a buggy along a 15 inch wide path on the side of Gowbarrow Fell in a sleet storm, it's about 5. There are no gates or stiles but there are points where children and their transport will have to be carried.
Transport: Friday Street car park is big, but it's likely to be busy this time of year. Please minimise car use and our environmental impact by sharing. Offer lifts and ask for lifts on the WhatsApp group.
Clothing: You will definitely need good, waterproof walking boots or wellies, and waterproof clothing, in case it rains.
Food and drink: Please bring a packed lunch and drinks. There is a servery selling pasties, cakes, hot and cold drinks in Leith Hill Tower.
Booking: We'll need to know who's going so we don't start without you. Please add your name on this Google form.
